The Alumni Association of the University of Michigan owns and operates their 400-acre summer family camp in northern Michigan. The camp hosts approximately 450 campers during each of the 10-week-long sessions at this pristine site on the shore of Walloon Lake. With more than 600,000 university alumni, the camp is committed to offering the popular family camping experience to more families and commissioned BCI to facilitate a strategic master planning process to identify the facility requirements to support increased housing and program capacity of the camp. During initial visioning work sessions, it was clear any proposed changes to camp would not adversely affect the feel of the experience. BCI based the planning on preserving the essence of the Michigania experience as the primary planning and design driver. The planning was complete in early 2020 and the Association will develop funding strategies for two phases of implementation.
